He or she mentioned that shows like the OC do the same stuff over and over, well, ALL shows are like this which is why a show like Buffy comes along once in a blue moon, it's different, it's fresh and it makes you stop and think. The same to other unique shows like Babylon 5, Highlander and hell even to some point a show like Briscoe County Jr. was cool to watch.

To me, and I know I am in the minority here as well, but shows dealing with reality suck. I've got enough reality going on in my life which is why shows like Buffy and Babylon 5, Highlander, etc greatly appeal to me. It's escapism pure and simple. From reality to another place. But never from reality to reality, that's just....not right.

As far as Buffy goes my favorite id season 7 because Spike is a good guy and Buffy's head is in a good place by this time. I respect her. I guess she's grown up in season 7.

As far as season 8, well, I like it and I try to remember it's only a comic so not to get overly disappointed. But Dawn as a Centaur? Weird...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-74564410898909086022008-08-21T16:12:00.000-07:002008-08-21T16:12:00.000-07:00Couldn't agree more. Frankly, the last 2 maudlin years of Buffy were so mired down in the boring and SO depressing "reality" that by the end I couldn't figure out why I was watching.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-73044607781929535622008-08-21T11:09:00.000-07:002008-08-21T11:09:00.000-07:00I have really appreciated your writings about Buff...I have really appreciated your writings about Buffy and Angel. I agree with a great deal of what you have said, the train wreck of Angel season 4 being the prime example. But are we going to talk about the horror of the last season of Buffy? Aside from the Andrew "Telling Stories" episode, it was pretty much a washout.

I applaud the fearless leaps of storytelling in both shows. However,I have become jaded by the atificial "darkness" that seems to stand in for depth in current screen writing. When brilliant storytelling starts taking this easy "dark" road, I writhe inside.

Thank you for your thoughts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-19523969265945144772008-08-21T10:14:00.000-07:002008-08-21T10:14:00.000-07:00I am in the minority when I say seasons 5,6 and 7 ...I am in the minority when I say seasons 5,6 and 7 were the best. I know this, No need to stake me but as much as I love the first four seasons, " And I do" They feel the same to me. I love the way in season 5 it's like "She has a sister?" That's a huge leap to take. In Season six Buffy doesn't want to live, The main villians are Super Nerds and on top of that lets do a Musical? Wow. Season seven she has to become a general to fight a war.

I guess what I'm trying to say is how many episodes of The Office or Scrubs can you watch before you realize it's the same jokes over and over and over again. It takes guts to so drastically change course.

That is what I love the most..Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-45991451300267872242008-08-21T07:34:00.000-07:002008-08-21T07:34:00.000-07:00Thanks for this! It was great to read...While I totally agree with you on one hand that "high school as hell" is the most universal story engine, on the other hand, we all grow up. We all leave high school sometime. And while our paths might not be as universal as the high school experience, I think the really interesting stuff starts once we get that high school diploma. Joss Whedon could have taken Buffy so many ways, and I don't always agree with what he did. However, I like and respect that no matter what, he had the guts to keep Buffy and the characters growing, changing, etc. It was real. Even with the monsters (after all, we all have personal demons, right?).

At some point, can you take on Veronica Mars or Battlestar Galactica? Thanks!Katherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01636152435125336469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-64044162131139593922008-08-20T20:38:00.000-07:002008-08-20T20:38:00.000-07:00Nice blog. While you're right that the high school paradigm worked best as an "engine" for infinite stories, the most interesting thing about Buffy as a character was that she actually grew up. Whedon and Co. didn't try to deny that the characters had aged (unlike, say, Josh Schwartz in The OC). Instead, he embraced it, and came out with a lot of great stories. I hated season 6 when I watched it in High School. I just wanted to see the gang back in the library. But, when I graduated college and found myself lost in a too big world, Season 6 was like a balm for my soul. Just like all of us, Buffy grew up.Danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00503714285466492359noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-54287794891571191622008-08-20T15:08:00.000-07:002008-08-20T15:08:00.000-07:00It's like Buffy says at the beginning of Season 8:...It's like Buffy says at the beginning of Season 8: "The thing about changing the world... once you do it, the world's all different."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-61530647458417968952008-08-12T03:57:00.000-07:002008-08-12T03:57:00.000-07:00Yes! You've articulated why I had trouble with the series as it went on - though you skipped the problem with them killing Buffy off and resurrecting her regularly - I know that works with comic books (sometimes), but it doesn't work as well with live actors. The first season was the best IMO. The stories were tight little morality plays that described high school - and life - with wit.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15742539.post-2190127636927418212008-08-12T03:28:00.000-07:002008-08-12T03:28:00.000-07:00Wow, always great to read your posts on the Storyt...Wow, always great to read your posts on the Storytelling Engines. There are lots of interesting ideas for why BtVS went off the air (and spinoff Angel only made it one more season). But I've made my peace with that, so no mouth-frothing rants from me :)

I do agree that "high-school is hell" was their best theme, though, and that they abandoned the college atmosphere too soon.

Thanks for the memories :)

Take it and run,Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
